What are Wisdom Teeth?

For most people the last teeth that will grow in their mouths are their Wisdom Teeth. They usually grow at the very back behind the main molars in the upper and lower gums. They usually grow through in your late teens or early twenties and can be accompanied by pain as they come through. Sometimes there is not enough room in your mouth for them, so they come through at an angle rather than growing straight, putting pressure on the teeth around them or the gum, which is commonly referred to as impaction. They can be difficult to clean, which in some cases may cause problems such as dental caries and tooth decay. You may need to have your wisdom teeth removed if they cause problems, for example if they don’t come through properly, grow in a difficult position or cause infections.

Looking After Your Wisdom Teeth

If you are experiencing your wisdom teeth coming through, there are things you should do to minimize the risk of pain and the chances of an infection. Brush the area around the teeth thoroughly with a small toothbrush using fluoride-based toothpaste. It may feel uncomfortable, but it is important as this helps get rid of food and plaque. Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water (1 tsp salt in 200ml of warm water) and keep the water in your mouth over the affected area for 1-2 minutes. Try not to swallow it. Repeat this up to four times a day. If the pain intensifies, we suggest you call us to make an appointment. We can assess the area and decide on the next course of action. It may well be that we prescribe some pain relief until further action can be taken. Do not wait for an infection to occur. Always see us before it gets to that stage.

If your experiencing discomfort with your wisdom teeth please call us.
